Redesigned JeremyRunning.com Launched
October 1, 2007You are now visiting the new and improved JeremyRunning.com. It has been redesigned from the ground up to be more dynamic, highlight my work easier, and allow for more interaction and participation. I had originally planned on building the site and all its functionality myself, since I actually was a web designer and programmer for over a decade.
The problem was that I am completely burned out on web development. It’s amazing how little motivation I’ve been able to muster in order to build my own website. So the old JeremyRunning.com just sat there as it was, updating the portfolio galleries arbitrarily.
After doing a lot of research, I realized there was no need for me to even write a single line of code. As long as I ditched my previous Windows hosting service and switched to a Linux hosting package. After working with IIS for years, I say good riddance! Going this route keeps things so modular, so versatile, it’s tough to know why I have stood by Windows web development for so long. The flexibility is outstanding!
So for all you fellow geeks out there, here’s a summary of what I chose to go with for the architecture of JeremyRunning.com:
- Hosted with midPhase on a Linux box
- Main content engine powered by Wordpress, running a modified version of the freshy theme
- Picture gallery run by Gallery2, running a slightly modified version of the embedded Floatrix theme
- Gallery2 content displayed within Wordpress pages with the help of the amazing WPG2 plugin
It’s amazing how flexible these tools are to use, customize, and expand upon based on whatever need you have. I am very thankful I was able to find a solution that I could build myself, but without touching a single bit of server-side ASP code.
